Employees who hold regular positions and are appointed 50% or more are eligible for group health insurance coverage.  The coverage effective date is usually the first of the month following 60 days on the payroll.  Information about the 60-day waiting period before eligibility for coverage can be found at http://www.hreo.ku.edu/files/documents/60_day_waiver_FAQ.pdf

The semi-monthly employee health insurance premiums are determined based upon full-time or part-time employment status as outlined below.   If the employee is active in more than one eligible position, the benefits eligibility status will be based on the combined FTE for all regular positions.

For benefits purposes, an employee is considered “full-time benefits eligible” with a regular appointment of 90% or more; a regular appointment that is 50% to 89% is “part-time benefits eligible.”

Full-time = 90 to 100% FTE (full time equivalency)
Part-time = 50 to 89% FTE (full time equivalency)

Changes to FTE will impact insurance premiums whenever the employee changes from a full-time to a part-time position or from a part-time to a full-time position (as outlined above).

In order to appropriately assess full or part-time benefits eligibility, appointment percentages for regular employees should be kept accurate and the appropriate time and leave should be recorded to match the FTE.  Appointments and time and leave should not vary more than 2 consecutive payroll periods, otherwise a Payroll Form should be submitted to modify the standard hours/FTE.  If a change in benefits eligibility is affected the employee’s records will be modified.

Eligibility ends the last day of the month following termination of employment.
