Optional Group Life Insurance

General Overview

The KPERS Administered Program is through Minnesota Life Insurance.

KPERS Administered Program

All benefits eligible employees may elect to purchase optional group life insurance coverage through additional payroll deductions.  Application to the program must be made within 31 days of the date of hire to be eligible for the guaranteed amount of $50,000. Any amounts applied for after the initial enrollment period will be subject to medical underwriting as well as any amounts over the $50,000.  Send the optional group life insurance form directly to the KU Staff Benefits Office, within twenty-one (21) days after your date of hire, as there are deadlines for application.

Coverage Amounts

Coverage amounts range from $5,000 to $250,000 and are on the employee only. Amounts over $50,000 must be underwritten by the insurance carrier. Monthly rates per thousand, effective January 1, 2011, which are based on age of employee and amount of coverage selected are as follows.

In addition to the premium rate, there is a $0.20 per month administration fee.

Teachers and Employee Association (TEA)

The other optional group term life insurance program is TEA offered to faculty and staff at The University of Kansas. See kutea.org for more information.

TEA's plan, underwritten by Reliance Standard, provides members with term life insurance protection from $10,000 to $500,000, in $10,000 increments. New members are offered up to $100,000 of term life insurance, and up to $500,000 of AD&D on a guaranteed issue (no medical question or exams) basis.

Spouses can apply for amounts of $5,000 to $250,000, in $5,000 increments. A spouse of a new member may apply for up to $50,000 of life insurance and $250,000 of AD&D on a guaranteed issue basis. Spouses are able to purchase a stand alone policy without the Member purchasing coverage.

Child(ren)'s coverage is available up to $10,000, in $2,000 increments for both life insurance and AD&D on a guaranteed issue basis for new members. One premium covers all eligible children, ages 6 months to age 25.
