Affiliates

Affiliates of the University of Kansas, Lawrence are (1) employees of the recognized University-affiliated corporations/organizations (KUAA, KUAC, KUEA, Kansas and Burge Unions, Hilltop, and ROTC); (2) individuals who are associated with and providing specific services to the University voluntarily and without compensation for these services; or (3) retired and emeritus members of the University of Kansas, Lawrence, faculty and staff and of the affiliate corporations/organizations.

If an injury occurs while affiliates are on site and providing service to the University, eligibility for coverage by workers' compensation is determined on a case-by-case basis.

* Affiliated Corporations: Those individuals eligible for affiliate status under the affiliated corporation category with the University must have an appointment to a regular ongoing position and be paid on the affiliated corporation payroll. Persons who hold such appointments are benefits eligible and work 20 hours or more per week (50%). Temporaries, intermittent or occasional employees, contractors and student employees are not considered as regular ongoing appointments.

Volunteers

Volunteers give their time and effort without cost to the University of Kansas and do not receive compensation, access to University facilities, and/or University services of any type for their work. Volunteers must be identified with their campus association by submitting the Volunteer Registration Form to HR/EO. If a volunteer is under 18 years of age, HR/EO should be contacted prior to the commencement of work to ensure compliance with all Federal and State Child Labor Laws.

Volunteers do not qualify as affiliates. In the event an injury occurs while volunteers are on-site and providing service to the University, departments should complete and submit the Workers Compensation 1101A Employers Report of Accident Form to HR/EO within 48 hours of the accident. Eligibility for workers' compensation coverage will be determined by the State Self Insurance Fund Office on a case-by-case basis. If the workers’ compensation claim is denied, contact HR/EO or the Office of the General Counsel for additional information regarding potential eligibility for reimbursement of medical expenses through the University.

Departments are not allowed to purchase Library cards on behalf of an individual; however volunteers are allowed to purchase KU Library Cards with personal funds. Please contact the Libraries for more information. If you have questions or need additional information regarding volunteers, please contact HR/EO at hrdept@ku.edu, 785/864-4946.
